J-Say 23.0 supports Dragon NaturallySpeaking version 16.1. Dragon NaturallySpeaking version 15 series will continue to be supported for some time to come. However the recommendation now is to upgrade to Dragon 16.1 if possible due to changes within Windows11 and Microsoft Office.
If you have J-Say 22 or 23 installed, you can install any update over the top of the existing installation. You do not need to uninstall the previous version first.
During the past six months, a great deal of time has been spent with customers who are using Dragon 16.1, so as to ensure that the screen-reading commands are working correctly. There have been some difficulties with interaction between JAWS and Dragon 16.1 and It is very much hoped that these difficulties are now in the past, but further updates may be made to this version before we move to J-Say version 24. We thank all customers for their patience during what has proved to be a fairly frustrating six months.
The option on the J-Say Configuration Wizard so as to download the latest build of J-Say has now been reinstated.
The voice command, Refresh Commands, should now be working correctly.
Dragon is now hidden in the System Tray area of Windows so it is no longer in the ALT+Tab order.
J-Say 23 now includes access to ChatGPT! A note to corporate customers: ChatGPT will not function unless an API key is provided. If people within places of employment are not permitted to use ChatGPT, there is no possibility of J-Say making use of it unless an API key is provided.
Imagine having a virtual assistant that can answer questions, improve your writing, and even create summaries for you—all within a few keystrokes. This same convenient, uncluttered experience will guide you when using ChatGPT in J-Say. Whether you’re working on a personal project, professional tasks, or simply feeding your curiosity, ChatGPT will elevate your computer experience like never before.
Ask Almost Anything—ChatGPT Has You Covered!.
With J-Say’s ChatGPT feature, you can ask questions on almost any topic, and you’ll get accurate, detailed responses within seconds. J-Say uses the most advanced and accurate language model available, ensuring precise and reliable answers. Most queries are answered in 15 seconds or less!
ChatGPT obtains information from the internet and this is prioritised over any previous data from which it previously learned. It gathers information in real-time, meaning that you always have answers based upon the most up-to-date information available.
Here are some examples of questions you might ask:
• What is the weather like in London today?
• What is the tallest mountain in the world?
• “Summarise the life and contributions of Ada Lovelace.”
• Give me the latest news headlines.
• “What are the key ingredients for making a traditional shepherd’s pie?”
The subject range is limitless—if you can ask it, ChatGPT can likely answer it.
Important Notes:
ChatGPT is incredibly useful and is ideal for voice recognition users. The reason for this is that it can significantly reduce the time it takes to locate information on the internet. We all know that using voice recognition on the internet can be very difficult and time consuming, despite the range of voice commands available. Any tool which can reduce this workload has to be a good thing. Improvements will be made in this area during the rest of this year and as we head into 2026 so as to assist customers further.
However, it is highly recommended that you do obtain at least some initial training in the use of J-Say and ChatGPT. It is not essential that you do so. You can read Chapter 47 of the J-Say User Guide, but there are 19 pages to study and work through. At least an hour of individual training is recommended so as to get you started in this exciting area. The optimum level of training is three hours. Please contact ourselves or your J-Say distributor for the cost of training. In summary, the use of AI could make an incredible difference to voice recognition users, but some initial supervision may be desired.
J-Say provides access to many functions of ChatGPT. However, to use this facility, you need an API key. An API key is like a digital password that grants you access to ChatGPT services through J-Say.
You may already have a subscription paid to ChatGPT for use in a web browser or on your phone. This is not the same as purchasing an API key and is entirely separate.
You can purchase your own API key if you wish. Full directions are given in the J-Say documentation relating to how this is done. However, Hartgen Consultancy can provide you with an API key at no cost as part of your J-Say purchase.
Conditions for Using Our Provided API Key.
Slightly Slower Response Times.

If an API key is significantly abused (for example, if thousands of queries are made in a single day), we reserve the right to remove the key without prior notice. This helps us protect the service for all users.
Restricted API Key Use.
The provided API key can only be used within J-Say and cannot be exported or used in other products.
Requesting an API Key.
• Send an email to brian@hartgenconsultancy.com.
