Leasey Sports and Games.

Introduction.

Leasey Sports and Games is here;and it's been one of our most requested features ever! Whether you're a die-hard fan or just like to keep tabs on your favorite teams, this powerful module brings the pulse of live sports right to your fingertips (and your ears), thanks to Leasey!

This isn’t just another scoreboard. This is your personal sports assistant, built to help you stay in the action;without lifting a finger.

With Leasey Sports and Games, you can:

We are slowly rolling out the Leasey Sports and Games module. Each sport has its own set of requirements and terminology, so it is important that we carefully manage one at a time. For the first round of this feature, we have focused on worldwide soccer, baseball, basketball, tennis and cricket.

To gain the full benefit of this feature, you are advised to read this chapter of the documentation fully as there are a number of procedures involved so as to gain the most from it.

Quality of Support.

Many hours have been spent testing and developing this module. You are currently reading the documentation for version one of Leasey Sports and Games. Over time, you may find that the interface (and the information reported) change as we learn more about what can be achieved.

We have chosen to use some of the most respected services available to provide sports information. For some sports, we have needed to take advantage of at least two different services to bring you accurate information. As a result, we can state the following:

As with all services we use (such as ChatGPT), changes are being made all the time and it is likely that some services will improve. When they do, we will bring them to you.

Having said all of that, we're confident that if you follow the documentation carefully, this will be an invaluable resource and we hope you enjoy using Leasey Sports and Games.

Before You Begin.

A number of the features of Leasey Sports and Games relate to notifying you of upcoming events at specific times of day, so it is important they are delivered within your own timezone. We will first set the timezone.

  1. Press the Leasey key then H to move into Leasey Help.
  2. Type number 4, just above the letter keys, to reach the item "4. Set Default Timezone for Upcoming Sporting Events."
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Focus is now in a list of timezones. The most commonly used timezones are at the top of the list, followed by a list of those remaining in alphabetical order. Use first letter navigation or the Up and Down Arrow keys to select a timezone and then press Enter. The timezone is permanently saved. You should not need to set the timezone again.

Accessing the Leasey Sports and Games Options.

The vast majority of the options for this module can be found on the Leasey Sports and Games menu, activated by pressing the Leasey Key followed by Shift+G for Games. This chapter will now describe the different activities you may like to carry out.

Useful Tip: Many of the options relate to soccer, baseball, international basketball, tennis or cricket . Each of the important options in this regard therefore begin with the name of the sport. You can type the initial letter repeatedly to more quickly find the option you want.

Listing Upcoming Events.

Before we are able to monitor the progress of live games, we need first to find out which games will be played on a specific day!

  1. Move into the Leasey Sports and Games menu by pressing the Leasey Key followed by Shift+G.
  2. Using the Down Arrow key, or by typing an initial letter of the sport of interest, find the option to view events for today or a specific date. For example, if you would like soccer, type letter S to reach "Soccer Events Today or on a Specific Date", or type the letter B repeatedly until you reach "Baseball Events Today or On a Specific Date".
  3. Press Enter and you move into the first of two screens. Each screen contains an edit field into which you may type information. If you wish to keep things simple, just press Enter twice without typing anything. All games relating to the current day in your local timezone are displayed for the chosen sport.
  4. However, if you wish, you can enter information into the two edit fields to carry out some very powerful filtering. The first screen asks for the date for which you wish to retrieve events. If you would like details of events for the current day, press Enter without typing anything. If you would like events for the following date, type the word "tomorrow" and press Enter. If you would like events for the current hour, type the word "hour". Finally, if you would like events for a specific date during 2025, type the month first followed by the date. A good example would be 0525 for May 25. This sounds rather like an automated telephone service doesn't it? We're sorry about that, but it does at least keep the number of screens to a minimum.
  5. Press Enter to move to the next screen. This is the filtering screen.
  6. If you press Enter without typing anything, all events for the selected day or hour will be returned within the JAWS Results Viewer. Alternatively, you can type a keyword or keywords. This is a very sophisticated filtering tool. You can, for example, type the word "England" to return all English games or "Scotland" to return those relating to Scotland. Type "Chicago" to return baseball games where the team name refers to Chicago. Type "Liverpool" or "West Ham" to see if those teams are playing on the chosen date. In summary, you ought to be able to type a geographical location or a team name to apply filtering.
  7. Press Enter and within a second or two the results should be returned. Note that in the case of tennis, it will take a few seconds longer to compute the results because Leasey has more work to do than is the case with the other sports.

You can read the events in the Results Viewer and if necessary press Escape to exit. However, there are reasons why you may wish to keep this window open and we will return to this later.

Here is typical output as to what may be returned for Saturday April 26:

Soccer

Date: April 26, 2025 | Timezone: Europe/London
Filtered by: england

Baseball

Date: April 26, 2025 | Timezone: America/New_York
Filtered by: cubs

Useful Tips.

If you carry out a further search for events on a specific date, the filter keywords previously entered will still be in use unless you change them. For example, if you had previously applied the filter keyword as "Cubs", and you move into the option to search for events on a specific date, when you reach the second screen JAWS will say this: "Type a keyword such as Chicago or Cubs, then press Enter. The current filter is Cubs".

It is important that you listen to the entire prompt in order that you know which filter is about to be applied. If you do miss the reading of the prompt, you can check the contents of the edit field with the Left and Right Arrow keys prior to pressing Enter.

There is a real advantage to this feature. If you know that you always want games specific to England, just set up the filter once and you should never need to change it again. Just pressing Enter on the filter screen without typing anything should always apply it. Each sport has its own individual filter. So in the previous example, if you had entered the word "England" into the soccer filter, that will not be applied to the other sports.

As previously described, you do not need to use the filtering option. If you would like to hear all events of today, regardless of the location or the teams and players taking part, move into the option described above . Then press Enter twice. Similarly, move into one of the menu options, type a date into the first edit field and nothing at all into the second edit field. Just be sure there really is nothing in the second edit field. If in doubt, press Backspace to erase the text prior to pressing Enter.

Finally, do not forget the feature to restrict the view to the current hour. This is very useful if you want to see which games are taking place during the current hour. Into the first edit field type the word "hour". You can apply a filter if you wish by typing into the second edit field or just leave it empty of content.

In summary, we have tried to make the Events selection screens easy to use while allowing some powerful filtering to be applied if needed. Try to become familiar with how the Events screens work because it is likely you will need them in the following sections. You cannot do any harm by trying them out.

Determining the Current Score For a Live Game.

You will now learn how to check the current score for an ongoing game and how to monitor the score in real-time.

Before we begin, let us define the two processes: checking for a live score of an ongoing game and monitoring.

You are about to learn how to check a live score. If you are not necessarily interested in monitoring a game constantly, described below, this is a useful option. You can simply move into this option and check the score.

However, you may wish to monitor the result of a game. This means that Leasey is regularly going to check the score for an ongoing game and notify you of any changes. We will fully discuss monitoring in the next section.

All of the sports follow exactly the same structure in terms of obtaining a live score or monitoring. The terminology you hear or read in Braille will vary according to the sport, but the process for managing them is identical. Every effort has been made to ensure that JAWS reports only the item which has changed; in other words, the latest score for a game which has been updated. If you are monitoring multiple games, Leasey tries to indicate which game or player the score relates to. This is essential from a screen-reading standpoint.

If a game is in progress, and you would like to learn the current score for it, there are two methods you can work through.

Checking the Score, Manual Player or Team Entry.

  1. Move into the Leasey Sports and Games menu by pressing the Leasey Key then Shift+G.
  2. Select one of the options to ascertain the current score when a game has begun. Good options might be "Soccer Live Score, Used When Games Have Begun", or "Baseball Live Score, Used When Games Have Begun". As the titles suggest, you should use these options when games have commenced and not in advance of a game starting.
  3. Into the edit field, type one of the team or player names participating in the game of interest. In the case of tennis, you need to type the name of a player participating in the game. This can be any player name participating in a singles or doubles match.
  4. Press Enter and the score will be returned within the JAWS Virtual Viewer like this:
Sydney 0, Home United 0, first half. 45 minutes
This tells you the current score, first or second half, and the number of minutes through the game in progress.
    Alternatively:
Chiba Lotte Marines 0, Nippon Ham Fighters 0, Inning 1
  5. You now have a choice. You can either press Escape to exit the Virtual Viewer. Alternatively, a link below the score may be present, containing the text "Start Monitoring". The text on the link reflects the type of sport you are about to monitor. For example, the text on the link may be "Start monitoring a cricket game" or "Start monitoring a tennis game". You can press Enter in order to begin monitoring.

Checking the Score From an Events Screen.

  1. Press the Leasey key then Shift+G to move into the Leasey Sports and Games menu.
  2. Select one of the upcoming events screens, such as "Soccer Events Today or on Specific Date". Then press Enter.
  3. Press Enter to select events of today.
  4. Press the Backspace key to ensure there is no text in the filtering field. This is going to ensure that we are retrieving all events of today relative to the sport selected. If you are experienced at using this tool, you can apply filtering.
  5. Press Enter and the events are returned within the JAWS Results Viewer.
  6. Press Down Arrow until the game you want to check is selected and spoken.
  7. Press the Leasey key then Shift+Z. Leasey will check to see if a game is in play and the current score. This will be announced if it is detected.

Checking the Score For Multiple Games.

There are particularly busy days when many games are taking place at the same time. Here is how to check the latest score for each game.

  8. Focus is still in the Results Viewer. The cursor is still on the line for the game you just checked.
  9. Press Down Arrow to find another game of interest.
  10. Press the Leasey key then Shift+Z to check the score for that game.
  11. Repeat this process until you have worked through all the games you wish to check.
  12. Optionally press Escape to exit out of the Results Viewer or keep the window open for later use. You may wish to check the scores for those games again in which case you can press ALT+Tab to focus back on the Events screen and repeat the process.

Useful Tip: If you want to get back to the same events screen at any time, press the Leasey key followed by ALT+Left Arrow. For example, you may have inadvertently closed the Results Viewer window by pressing Escape. Pressing this key combination will display the last search which had taken place.

Monitoring for Score Changes.

Before you begin to learn how the monitoring process works, it is important to discuss some key options on the Leasey Games and Sports menu specific to this topic.

Important Note: under no circumstances can you monitor a mix of games, such as tennis or cricket. All the games being monitored must be of the same type.

Monitoring a Live Game.

It is now time to learn how to monitor a live game. In theory, you should be able to monitor as many games as you like, but we would suggest you aim for a maximum of 10. Start by monitoring just one game so as to get used to the process. Most certainly, people who are unused to working with this kind of technology should only monitor one game at a time.

The more games you monitor, the slower the response time will be. You should keep this in mind. For example, it takes approximately two seconds to check the score of a game. So if your timer is set to 30 seconds, and you are monitoring 10 games, that is an additional 20 seconds you are adding. There is likely to be a 50 second delay between JAWS reporting a change in score. In summary: if a game is really important to you, just monitor that one and set a timer for 30 seconds.

There are two methods for monitoring games.

Monitoring Games, Manual Player or Team Entry.

  1. Move into the Leasey Sports and Games menu by pressing the Leasey Key then Shift+G.
  2. Select one of the options relating to the sport of interest, such as "Soccer Live Score, Used When Games Have Begun", or "Baseball Live Score, Used When Games Have Begun". As the titles suggest, you should use these options when games have commenced.
  3. Into the edit field, type one of the team or player names participating in the game of interest.
  4. Press Enter and the score will be returned within the JAWS Virtual Viewer.
  5. Below this statement, a link should be available to begin monitoring a game, such as "Start Monitoring a Soccer Game" or "Start Monitoring a Baseball Game". Press Enter on the link and monitoring will begin.
  6. You can now press Escape to exit out of the Virtual Viewer screen.

Monitoring Games From an Events Screen.

This is very important. There is no value in trying to monitor an event which does not exist.
  8. To begin monitoring the game, press the Leasey key then Shift+X. The Results Viewer window will still be in focus but monitoring will have commenced and will be confirmed by JAWS.

Comments On Monitoring Games.

However you have chosen to begin monitoring, from this point you can use any application on your computer while the game is ongoing. You will hear the current value of the timer, such as "Timer set for 30 seconds". As the game progresses, one of two things may happen:

If you miss the announcement, it can always be repeated by pressing the Leasey Key followed by Shift+Z. A summary of all games being monitored is placed into the JAWS Virtual Viewer for closer inspection. Press Escape to return to your regular working environment. In fact, that keystroke doesn't just repeat the last announcement. It will check for the latest score of all monitored games. So if you had set a monitor time for five minutes, but you're desperate to know what the latest score is, you can always press that keystroke to do a fresh check.

Monitoring should automatically stop when Leasey detects the game is over. However, in the event this does not happen, you can always stop monitoring at any time by moving into the Leasey Games and Sports menu and selecting the first item, "Stop or Clear Monitoring Live Score".

Monitoring Multiple Games.

The process for monitoring multiple games is almost identical to that used for monitoring a single game.

Monitoring Multiple Games, Manual Player or Team Entry.

  5. Below this statement, a link should be available to begin monitoring an additional game, such as "Start Monitoring an additional Soccer Game" or "Start Monitoring an additional Baseball Game". Press Enter on the link and monitoring will begin.
  6. You can now press Escape to exit out of the Virtual Viewer screen.

Monitoring Multiple Games From an Events Screen.

Of course you may already have the Results Window open if you had previously been checking scores, in which case you can ignore the above steps.
  6. Press Down Arrow until the game you want to check is selected and spoken.
  7. Press the Leasey key then Shift+Z. Leasey will check to see if a game is in play and the current score. This will be announced if it is detected. This is very important. There is no value in trying to monitor an event which does not exist.
  8. To begin monitoring the additional game, press the Leasey key then Shift+X. The Results Viewer window will still be in focus but monitoring will have commenced and will be confirmed by JAWS.

Comments On Monitoring Multiple Games.

The audio feedback you will receive is identical to that you experienced when monitoring a single game. However, when announcing an important event, JAWS will only speak details of the game which has changed. For example, if you were monitoring two games, and a team had scored within game two, you will only hear the details relating to the second game. This ensures that you only hear the information of interest.

If you miss the announcement, it can always be repeated by pressing the Leasey Key followed by Shift+Z. However this time, there is an important difference as we are monitoring multiple games. The Virtual Viewer will show a summary of all the games being monitored even if the score has not changed for some time. Press Escape to exit out of the Virtual Viewer.

Monitoring should automatically stop when Leasey detects that all games being monitored are over. However, in the event this does not happen, you can always stop monitoring at any time by moving into the Leasey Games and Sports menu and selecting the first item, "Stop or Clear Monitoring Live Score".

What About The Item on the Menu, Reinstate Sports Session. What Is That Used For?

Good question. There are two reasons why you may need this option.

Let us assume that you are monitoring a lengthy game or series of games. Unfortunately, at some point during the monitoring, JAWS stops responding and you need to restart it. All your monitored games are lost. Here is how to reinstate the games you were monitoring:

  1. When JAWS is restarted, move into the Leasey Sports and Games option by pressing Leasey key then Shift+G.
  2. Select the item on the menu, "Reinstate Sports Session".
  3. Press Enter. Monitoring of your game or games will begin again.

You may be monitoring a game or a series of games, but this needs to be stopped temporarily, perhaps because of a phone call you need to take or you have to work on your computer and not be interrupted by sports results.

  1. Move into the Leasey Sports and Games menu by pressing the Leasey key then Shift+G.
  2. Select the first option, "Stop or Clear Monitoring Live Score".
  3. Press Enter and monitoring is stopped.
  4. When you wish to resume monitoring, move back into the Leasey Sports and Games menu.
  5. Select the option "Reinstate Sports Session".
  6. Press Enter and monitoring picks up from where it left off.

Changing the Timer.

It is worth pointing out that you can change the timer midway through monitoring a game or a series of games. Remember, this is the mechanism used by Leasey to periodically check for changes in score.

You may have set the timer for five minutes, so in that event, Leasey will check for a change in score every five minutes. However, the game is getting more exciting, and you want to keep up with the score as quickly as possible. Go back into the Leasey Sports and Games menu, select "Set Sports Timer", and change it to 30 seconds. You will then receive more frequent notifications.

Important Considerations When Monitoring.

Many tests have been carried out to monitor a large number of games. However it is important to keep the following in mind:

JAWS is a screen-reader. It is probably not designed to do half the things we are doing with it, and that includes monitoring for sports event changes! So, we ask you to exercise some care. Try not to monitor too many games at once. A discussion relating to the impact of that can be found above.

Enabling the click sound to denote when Leasey is checking for a score change is recommended. You then are aware that the monitor is still working.

If possible, try to disable any other automatic checking functions. Monitoring for weather changes is a good example. Tests have been conducted with weather monitoring enabled, but the less pressure you can place upon JAWS, the better it will be.

If monitoring stops for whatever reason, don't forget that you can always enable your sports monitoring session again by moving into the Sports and Games menu and selecting the item to reinstate the existing session.

In the event that all games have completed, and Leasey is still trying to monitor for games, you should move into the Leasey Sports and Games menu and select the first item to stop monitoring.

Checking the Most Recent Score for a Team or Player.

With hundreds of sporting events taking place every day, there's a good chance you may have missed the result for a favourite team. Here is how you can check that.

  1. Press the Leasey key then Shift+G to move into the Leasey Sports and Games menu.
  2. Select one of the Recent Score options, such as "Baseball Recent Score, Retrieve the Last Score for a Team".
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Type a team or player name.
  5. Press Enter and the score for the most recent game should be returned to you within the JAWS Virtual viewer. Press Escape to exit.

You should receive details like this:

New York Mets 1, Arizona Diamondbacks 5 (Final).

The word, "Final", in this context means that the game is no longer in play.

Checking Details of Upcoming Games of a Team or Player.

It is possible to check details of upcoming games for a team or player.

  1. Press the Leasey key then Shift+G to move into the Leasey Sports and Games menu.
  2. Locate one of the options for the next upcoming games, such as "Soccer Next Games, Retrieve Details of Upcoming Games in Which the Team Participates" or "Baseball Next Games, Retrieve Details of Upcoming Games in Which the Team Participates".
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Type a team or player name and press Enter.
  5. The upcoming games should be displayed within the JAWS Virtual Viewer. Press Escape to exit.

The information gathered in relation to upcoming games is retrieved from various sources on the internet. Dates and times are subject to change. However, we have made every effort to ensure that the structure is consistent across all sports.

You should see results like this:

Note that the game times should be relative to the timezone previously selected.

Sports Headlines.

You can retrieve the latest sports headlines relative to one of a number of countries. In point of fact, this is a shortcut to one of the components of LeaseyNews. Let's remind you of how to set this relative to your desired country:

  1. Press the Leasey key followed by H to move into Leasey Help.
  2. Type number 1, just above the letter keys, so as to reach the option "1. Set Default Country for Searches and for ChatGPT".
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Select one of the available countries and then press Enter.

If you now select the option on the Leasey Sports and Games menu, "Sports News", you should receive headlines for the supported country. Back to Help Index.
